Hospice Care

Hospice care can be administered in hospice centers or delivered at seniors’ homes, hospitals or nursing homes. Hospice care is meant for terminally ill seniors who require continuous pain management attention and who are in the last stage of their lives. Hospice care helps eliminate pain, live in comfort, maintain personal dignity, and allow seniors to die in peace.

What is Hospice Care

Hospice care includes pain management with administration of pain medication and continuous medical attention and supervision. Seniors who are recommended for hospice care will typically have six months or less to live.

Services provided by hospice care staff and hospice centers include the following:

  • Private resting / sleeping quarters
  • Personal care
  • Pain management
  • Medical care
  • Medication administration

From a clinical perspective, hospice care is classified as a level of pain management and symptom relief provided to patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. A hospice support team consists of medical professionals, grief counselors, and community volunteers who are all trained in end of life issues.

Home care agencies can also provide in-home hospice care, the cost of which will be significantly cheaper when compared with hospice care centers, hospitals, or nursing homes.

Why Choose Hospice Care

The key benefits are:

  • Pain management for the senior
  • Peace of mind for the family
  • Personal dignity

Hospice Care Payment Options

Hospice and palliative care is usually covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans.  Medicare requires hospice services to be provided at home and asks for certification by a physician at the beginning of each of two 90-day periods.  Co-payments are paid by patients and their families when they can afford them.  Otherwise, hospice agencies usually cover the costs through charitable donations and are still able to provide the care.
